📰 Assam’s Baksa Exports 20 MT of ODOP Honey to the USA in Historic First Shipment
In a major boost to India’s agricultural exports, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) flagged off the first-ever export consignment of 20 metric tons of One District One Product (ODOP) honey from Baksa, Assam, to the United States on May 9, 2026. The shipment was dispatched from Guwahati, marking a significant milestone in connecting products from India’s Aspirational Districts to international markets. 🍯🌍
The export initiative is expected to significantly improve incomes for local beekeepers and farmers, who are projected to receive nearly 43% higher price realisation compared to local market rates. The honey is produced by farmers from indigenous communities including the Bodo, Karbi, and Mishing tribes, highlighting the growing role of rural and tribal entrepreneurship in India’s export economy.
Baksa honey is gaining attention for its high nutritional value and production in pesticide-free environments, giving it near-organic characteristics. To support international market access, APEDA provided testing and laboratory support to ensure compliance with global food safety standards.
Assam produced approximately 1,650 metric tons of honey during FY 2023–24, with Baksa and other districts in the Bodoland Territorial Region emerging as major production hubs. The successful export to the USA is expected to create more opportunities for India’s honey exporters and strengthen the global presence of products developed under the ODOP initiative.
This achievement reflects India’s continued push toward promoting local products globally while empowering farmers through international trade opportunities. 🚀🌍
